Description

Sharp Grit Sand is a natural coarse sand typically graded between 0–4mm. It contains angular to sub angular particles with a low proportion of fines. The grading supports structural use.

The angular shape allows particles to interlock when compacted. This improves load distribution and reduces movement under traffic or structural loads. The open texture permits water to drain freely.

It is widely used in domestic building work, commercial groundworks, and civil construction. Typical uses include concrete production, paving bedding, slab support, and drainage layers.

Grading and Particle Structure

Sharp Grit Sand is characterised by a coarse grading and angular grain shape. These properties support stability and strength in construction layers.

  • Angular particles improve interlock.

  • Coarse grading limits shrinkage.

  • Low fines maintain open structure.

Drainage and Water Interaction

This material allows effective water movement through the matrix. It does not retain excessive moisture.

  • Free draining structure reduces waterlogging.

  • Limited fines reduce silting risk.

  • Open texture supports frost resistance.

Load Bearing Behaviour

When compacted, Sharp Grit Sand provides reliable support. It performs well beneath bonded and unbonded layers.

  • Particle interlock improves load transfer.

  • Compacted layers resist deformation.

  • Suitable beneath paving and slabs.

Compaction and Placement

The sand compacts efficiently with mechanical effort. Controlled moisture improves compaction results.

  • Responds well to plate compaction.

  • Maintains profile after placement.

  • Reduced settlement under load.

Standards and Classification

Sharp Grit Sand is supplied in accordance with recognised UK aggregate grading practices. It is suitable for general construction and groundwork applications where coarse sand is specified.

Material Consistency

As a natural aggregate, colour and particle shape may vary between sources. Performance remains consistent within grading tolerance.

Fines Content and Cleanliness

Sharp Grit Sand contains a low proportion of clay and silt fines. This supports strength, drainage, and predictable compaction behaviour. Clean grading reduces performance variability.

  • Low clay content improves drainage performance.

  • Reduced fines limit water retention.

  • Clean particles maintain consistent compaction.

Concrete Mixing and Aggregate Blends

Sharp grit sand is commonly used as the sand component in concrete mixes where strength and reduced shrinkage are required. Its coarse grading and angular particle shape support effective bonding with cement and aggregate.

In site-mixed concrete, sharp grit sand is typically combined with cement and coarse aggregate such as gravel or ballast. The sand fills voids between larger particles, improving density and load distribution while maintaining workable consistency when correctly proportioned.

Sharp grit sand is not normally used on its own for concrete without coarse aggregate. Where pre-blended materials are required, ballast may be selected instead, as it already contains both sand and stone in a single material.

Supply Formats and Typical Use

Sharp grit sand is supplied in both loose bulk and bagged formats, depending on project scale and site requirements.

Bulk supply is commonly selected for construction sites, groundworks, and landscaping projects where larger volumes are required. It supports efficient placement for concrete production, paving preparation, and drainage works.

Bagged supply is typically used for smaller domestic projects, maintenance work, or locations with restricted access. Both supply formats provide the same material characteristics, with selection based on handling and volume requirements rather than performance differences.

Trade Supermarket - UK Supply and Hire Platform

Trade Supermarket is a UK-based platform supplying plant hire, aggregates, and building materials for a wide range of project types nationwide. Products and services are structured in line with recognised UK classifications and standard supply and hire practices.

What Sets Trade Supermarket Apart

  • Unified Platform Structure: Hire services, aggregates, and building materials are all managed through one unified system instead of separate suppliers.

  • Classification-Led Organisation: Products are shown using standard UK grades, categories, and typical use-cases to help buyers choose accurately.

  • Defined Supply Scope: The platform focuses on supplying materials and equipment in a clear, straightforward way, without adding design or installation services.

  • Use-Case Neutral Positioning: Products are suitable for home, commercial, and large-scale projects without assuming a specific type of customer.

  • Consistent Operational Standards: All product categories follow clear, uniform processes to ensure a steady and reliable experience every time.

Supply and Delivery Responsibility

  • Material Variation: Aggregates are natural or recycled materials and variation in colour, shape, and composition can occur between sources and deliveries.

  • Quantity and Coverage: Materials are supplied by weight or volume as ordered. Coverage, yield, and performance are influenced by application method and ground conditions.

  • Delivery and Site Access: Delivery requires suitable access for the selected vehicle type. Clear access, adequate space, and stable ground conditions must be available at the delivery location.

  • Offloading Conditions: Materials are offloaded at ground level only. Placement, spreading, or installation services are not included as part of supply.

  • Returns and Surplus Material: Bulk aggregates are non-returnable once delivered. Customers should ensure quantities are calculated accurately before placing an order.

  • Supply Scope: Supply is limited to the provision of materials only. Product selection, suitability assessment, and installation remain the responsibility of the buyer or appointed contractor.
