Fill Sand
Fill Sand is a fine natural aggregate used for bulk filling, levelling, and backfilling applications where drainage control and structural load performance are not required.
Description
Fill Sand is a natural fine aggregate composed mainly of sand-sized particles with variable fines content. It is unwashed and ungraded compared to concreting or sharp sands. It is commonly referred to as Cable Sand or general fill sand.
It compacts under applied load when placed and consolidated. The presence of fines reduces permeability and increases cohesion. Load distribution is limited compared to graded sub-base materials.
This sand is used in domestic, commercial, and civil groundworks. Typical uses include bulk infill, void filling, trench backfill, and level correction where engineering performance is not specified.
Material Classification and Composition
Fill Sand is classified as a natural primary aggregate. The material is composed of sand-sized particles with varying proportions of silt fines depending on source and extraction method. No controlled grading envelope applies.
Typical Size Ranges
Fine Fill Sand
Fine fill sand generally contains particles from around 0.06 mm up to 2 mm. This finer material is suitable for general backfilling, rendering support, and forming compacted make-up layers where drainage is not a priority.
Coarser Fill Sand
Coarser fill sand typically falls within a 0–4 mm or 0–5 mm range. This material is sometimes referred to as grit sand or sharp sand depending on source. The coarser grading allows improved drainage and is commonly used beneath slabs, for utility bedding, and in applications where reduced moisture retention is required.
Drainage and Water Interaction
Fill Sand exhibits restricted drainage due to the presence of fines. Moisture is retained within the matrix and water movement is slow.
Low permeability under compaction
High moisture retention compared to washed sands
Unsuitable for free draining layers
Compaction and Load Behaviour of Fill Sand
It is reduces voids when compacted but does not achieve engineered density. Load transfer is limited and variable.
Moderate compaction response when moist
Low and inconsistent load bearing capacity
Not suitable for structural support layers
Consistency and Material Variability
Natural variation in colour, particle size distribution, and fines content is expected. Moisture content varies between loads. Performance characteristics are not uniform.
Application Suitability Comparison
Fill Sand suitability depends on performance demand and drainage requirement.
Application | Suitable | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Trench backfill | Yes | Provides bulk infill with basic compaction |
Void filling | Yes | Fine particles fill irregular spaces |
Landscaping level make-up | Yes | Allows ground height adjustment |
Slab sub-base | No | Insufficient load bearing |
Drainage layer | No | Restricted water movement |
Structural foundation layer | No | Not engineered or graded |
Compliance and Standards Awareness
Fill Sand is supplied as a general fill material. It is not produced to SHW Series 600 or BS EN graded aggregate classifications. Suitability is application dependent and not specification driven.
Suitability and Usage Limitations of Fill Sand
Suitable For:
Bulk backfilling operations
Utility trench reinstatement below formation
Void filling around structures
General ground level correction
Non structural infill beneath slabs
Not Suitable For:
Structural sub-base layers
Drainage or soakaway systems
Block paving bedding layers
Concrete or mortar production
Load bearing foundation support
Application Suitability Reference
Application | Suitable | Reason |
|---|---|---|
Utility trench backfill | Yes | Economical bulk fill |
Floor build-up infill | Yes | Supports non structural layers |
Landscaping make-up | Yes | Ground level adjustment |
Highway sub-base | No | Does not meet grading standards |
Paving bedding | No | Poor drainage and stability |
Drainage trenches | No | Fines restrict flow |
Fill Sand Compared to Other Common Construction Sands
Fill sand is a low grade construction sand used for bulk filling, level raising, and ground make up. It differs from other construction sands which are processed and graded for specific performance requirements rather than mass fill use.
Sand Type | Same as Fill Sand | Key Difference |
|---|---|---|
Building Sand | No | Fine graded for bricklaying and plastering |
Sharp Sand | No | Coarse and angular for concrete and paving |
Concrete Sand | No | Trade name for sharp sand |
Utility Sand | Sometimes | Variable grading for trench backfill |
Reject Sand | Yes | Low grade processing by product |
Pit Sand | Sometimes | Depends on screening and processing |
Trade Supermarket - UK Supply and Hire Platform
Trade Supermarket is a UK-based platform supplying plant hire, aggregates, and building materials for a wide range of project types nationwide. Products and services are structured in line with recognised UK classifications and standard supply and hire practices.
What Sets Trade Supermarket Apart
Unified Platform Structure: Hire services, aggregates, and building materials are supplied through a single operational framework rather than separate merchant systems.
Classification-Led Organisation: Products are presented using recognised UK grading, classification, and typical use categories to support correct selection.
Defined Supply Scope: The platform focuses on material supply and equipment hire only, with design, specification, and installation remaining outside the scope of service.
Use-Case Neutral Positioning: Products support domestic, commercial, and infrastructure projects without retail-led assumptions.
Consistent Operational Standards: The same structural and procedural standards are applied across all product categories.
Supply and Delivery Responsibility
Material Variation: Aggregates are natural or recycled materials and variation in colour, shape, and composition can occur between sources and deliveries.
Quantity and Coverage: Materials are supplied by weight or volume as ordered. Coverage, yield, and performance are influenced by application method and ground conditions.
Delivery and Site Access: Delivery requires suitable access for the selected vehicle type. Clear access, adequate space, and stable ground conditions must be available at the delivery location.
Offloading Conditions: Materials are offloaded at ground level only. Placement, spreading, or installation services are not included as part of supply.
Returns and Surplus Material: Bulk aggregates are supplied on a non returnable basis once delivered. Buyers should allow appropriate tolerances when calculating quantities.
Supply Scope: Supply is limited to the provision of materials only. Product selection, suitability assessment, and installation remain the responsibility of the buyer or appointed contractor.
